commentary

On April 14, 1886, the artist's father wrote of this picture, "Mame [Mary] is pretty well and working like a beaver getting ready for an exhibition which they propose having in May. She is now engaged on a little red-headed girl in demi-costume dressing her hair before a glass. The two or three experts and artists who have seen it praise it without stint. As for Degas, he was quite enthusiastic for him."[1] Degas appears to have liked the painting enough to acquire it, probably in exchange for a work that he exhibited in the May 1886 Impressionist exhibition: Woman Bathing in a Shallow Tub (New York, Metropolitan Museum of Art).

The bamboo chair and fabric pattern depicted by Cassatt in this painting can be seen in a photograph taken around 1900 of Alexander Cassatt's Pennsylvania house, "Cheswold."
