commentary

Anna Riddle Scott (d. 1901), a cousin of Cassatt's mother, was the widow of Thomas A. Scott, a former president of the Pennsylvania Railroad and a mentor to Alexander J. Cassatt. Mrs. Scott's mother, Mary Dickinson Riddle, posed for Cassatt's Lady at the Tea Table. The Scotts' daughter Mary also sat for her portrait by Cassatt, Portrait of Mrs. Clement B. Newbold, around 1894. Mary Scott later wed the Philadelphia banker Clement B. Newbold, who served as the president of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
