commentary

Edward Chandler Walker (1851–1915), president of the Detroit Museum of Art, purchased Three Women Admiring a Child in 1908. He presented the work to the Detroit Museum to express his approval of the board of trustees' purchase that year of Thomas Wilmer Dewing's painting The Recitation for the museum's collection.[1]

Walker was the son of Hiram Walker, the American distiller best known for producing Canadian Club whiskey. The younger Walker commissioned the well-known Detroit architect Albert Kahn to design his estate, Willistead, in the Walkerville section of Windsor, Ontario, which was developed by Hiram Walker as the site of his distillery beginning in 1856.[2]
