commentary

Cyrus J. Lawrence (1832‚Äď1908) founded the Wall Street investment banking firm Cyrus J. Lawrence & Sons.

Alexander Morten collected American paintings and is known to have been a friend to the artist J. Alden Weir. Morten's wife, Marjory Leland Morten (d. 1958), like Cassatt, was active in the suffrage movement around 1915. Mrs. Morten practiced and wrote about the Bahá'í Faith, and in 1912 she and her husband hosted at their New York City apartment a lecture given by Abdu'l-Bahá, son of Bahá'u'lláh, Prophet-founder of the Bahá'í Faith.

Baby Charles Looking over His Mother's Shoulder (No. 3) once bore a label from the "First Annual Exhibition 1912" of an unidentified institution, where it was shown as Mother and Child, lent by Alexander Morten.
