commentary

Smiling Sara in a Big Hat Holding Her Dog (No. 1) is known only through a photograph of unknown origin located in Adelyn Dohme Breeskin's files.[1] The medium is pastel; the support is likely paper; and the dimensions are not known.

Breeskin incorrectly published this work as having been sold as lot #73 in an auction held at the HĂ´tel Drouot, Paris, on April 27, 1929. A similar work, Sara, in a Bonnet with Streamers Loose, and Her Dog, was actually sold as lot #73, and no other pictures by Cassatt were offered in that sale.

It is not known whether the name Gaston LĂ©vy, given by Breeskin as the buyer from this 1929 sale, was meant to be associated with Smiling Sara in a Big Hat Holding Her Dog (No. 1) or Sara, in a Bonnet with Streamers Loose, and Her Dog, and no evidence has emerged to confirm his association with either work.

Smiling Sara in a Big Hat Holding Her Dog (No. 1) was also listed in the Breeskin catalogue raisonné of Cassatt's works as having been purchased by Adelaide M. de Groot and given by her to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. No evidence of de Groot's ownership has been discovered, and this pastel is not among the works she donated to the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Counterproofs after this work exist.
