commentary

Albert E. McVitty (d. 1948) spent his entire business career with Philadelphia leather merchants Leas & McVitty. A patron of the arts, McVitty owned large groups of prints by Rembrandt and Goya in addition to numerous works by Cassatt.

Sydney Shoenberg is either the founder of the St. Louis investment company Sydney M. Shoenberg & Co. (1881–1975) or his son (1911–2001).

Herbert Henry Lehman (1878–1963), son of one of the original partners of the investment firm Lehman Brothers, served first as lieutenant governor of New York under Franklin D. Roosevelt for two terms beginning in 1929 and then as governor for four terms beginning in 1933. A graduate of Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, Lehman bequeathed Woman in an Orange Wrapper Holding Her Nude Baby to the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute, also in Williamstown.
