commentary

William M. Milliken, the director of the Cleveland Museum of Art, wrote directly to Mary Cassatt asking about the dates of her two works in the museum's collection, the pastel After the Bath and the painting Augusta with Her Forefinger on Her Cheek. Cassatt replied in a letter of March 24, 1922, "The Pastel dates from 1901 and the painting 'Woman leaning on her hand,' 1910. I have not been in the habit of dating my pictures and am glad I am able to give the dates."[1]
