commentary

Arnold S. Kirkeby, president of the financing company Kirkeby-Natus Corporation, made his initial fortune in hotels, among them the Warwick in New York and the Beverly-Wilshire in Beverly Hills, California. Kirkeby died March 1, 1962, on board a Los Angeles-bound American Airlines jet that crashed two minutes after take-off from New York. The Bel Air mansion once shared by Kirkeby and his wife Carlotta (1906–1985) served as the exterior façade for the Clampett family mansion in the sitcom The Beverly Hillbillies, which premiered in September 1962.
