commentary

Counterproofs after this work exist.

German-born Mary Ann Adler worked as an art restorer for Stendahl Galleries, Hollywood, California, and for Walter C. and Mary Arensberg, who donated an important collection of modern art to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Adler's sister Augusta served as the personal assistant to Austrian theater and film director Max Reinhardt.

In 1968, Alfred Stendahl of Stendahl Galleries in Hollywood and New York wrote to Adelyn Dohme Breeskin that Mary Ann Adler had received this pastel from Cassatt and "would never sell it," but he was able to buy it after her death from her sister Augusta.[1] While it is not impossible that Mary Ann Adler got the work directly from the artist, no supporting evidence has emerged. Furthermore, the pastel was consigned by a New York private collector to a Kende Galleries auction in 1949 and appears to have been sold. Unless Mary Ann Adler was the consignor and the work did not in fact sell, it is not possible to reconcile the provenance as provided by Stendahl and the Kende sale.
