commentary

Fritzie Martinson was the widow of Joseph Martinson (d. 1949), who founded the Martinson Coffee Company in 1898, only a few years after his parents brought him to New York from Latvia. The Martinsons' son Joseph B. Martinson (1911–1970) ran the family company until it was sold to Beech-Nut Life Savers Inc. in 1961. Very active in botany and the arts, Joseph was a founder of the institution now known as the American Folk Art Museum in New York.
